Professor Peter Butler

Peter E M Butler MD, FRCSI, FRCS, FRCS(Plast) is a graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Ireland, obtaining diplomas MB BCh LRCPSI in 1987. He did his general surgical training in Dublin and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCS) in 1991 and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1992.

He began training in Plastic Surgery in Dublin followed by a research fellowship in Plastic Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. He became a senior registrar in Plastic Surgery on the London Training Scheme; training in St Andrew's Centre, Billericay, St George's Hospital, The Royal Marsden Hospital and Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. He passed the Plastic Surgery Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1998 FRCS (Plast.).

Mr Butler was entered into the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in 1999. He is a full member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPS) and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). He is a council member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons and chairman of the Research and Education Committee. He has published many book chapters and has over one hundred publications in Plastic Surgery, has presented internationally in the USA, Canada, Italy, France and Mexico. He has an active clinical and laboratory based research program. One of his main areas of research is facial transplantation. He leads the UK Facial Transplant team. The work he has been involved in has received awards from the New England Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Research Council, USA and the British Association of Plastic Surgeons.

He is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Royal Free and University College Hospitals, London and a Consultant in Plastic Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. In 2005, he was appointed Visiting Professor to the Divisions of Plastic Surgery, University of Pittsburgh and MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Texas.

His interests include all aspects of plastic and aesthetic surgery of the face, breast, abdomen and trunk.
